 Tibet In Song

* Coming to Seattle @ Landmark Varsity Dec 3 - Dec 10

In 1995, Ngawang Choephel, a Tibetan student at Middlebury College, was arrested in Tibet. He was charged with espionage and sentenced to 18 years in prison.

In 2002, after a sustained campaign launched by Tibet support groups including Students for a Free Tibet, Ngawang Choephel was released. Undeterred by seven years of imprisonment, Ngawang continued his research on Tibetan folk music and its battle for survival amidst China’s cultural imperialism.

The result of his work, TIBET IN SONG, is an award-winning new film that is both a celebration of traditional Tibetan folk music and a harrowing journey into the past fifty years of cultural repression inside Chinese-occupied Tibet.

Ngawang Choephel weaves a mesmerizing story of beauty, pain, brutality and resilience, introducing Tibet to the world in a way never before seen on film.

Especially at a time when Tibetan musicians, artists, and writers are being routinely arrested, imprisoned, and tortured for simply expressing their identity and culture, TIBET IN SONG serves to amplify their voices and the voices of all Tibetans fighting for the very survival of their unique cultural heritage.
