Welcome to Tibetan Language and Culture School
Tibetan Language and Cultural School (TLCS) is a community supported program dedicated to teaching our children the language, culture, music and dance of Tibet. It is a project of the Tibetan Association of Washington (TAW), guided by a volunteer Parent Steering Committee. The Board of TAW provides oversight over TLCC functions . There had been efforts in the past to institute similar program but did not last. In 2007, TLCC was founded under guidance of Tashi Namgyal la, then president of TAW with Tsewang Chamatsang la as the founding Director. From it’s very simple beginning with help from generous friends, we were fortunate in 2011 when TAW was accepted by the Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund Program, that enabled us to buy our beautiful costumes, musical instruments, hire an instructor that allowed us to thrive to present day. We remain grateful to our friends, supporters, City of Seattle and Washington state.
We have 3 classes distributed by age for written and spoken language instruction and performing arts session. The classes are held Sunday afternoons, currently at the Shoreline Lake Forest Senior Center. Using hands-on, age appropriate and interactive teaching strategies, TLCS promotes scholarship, respect, appreciation, participation and excitement in preserving the Tibetan culture that is being suppressed in Tibet by the Chinese Communist Government. Above all, we strive for our kids to value compassion, humility, integrity, freedom and grow up to be a global citizen.
Our students participate in various city wide events like the Tibet Fest of Festal series, SeaFair Parade, Children’s Festival etc. in addition to our community gatherings like Losar (Tibetan New Year), HH the Dalai Lama Birthday, Human Rights Day etc.
We are indebted to our community, friends and supporters. Thank you again for your kind support. We are mindful of the many needs and opportunities for service and giving in our community, and we sincerely appreciate your partnership in the critical effort to preserve the Tibetan language and cultural arts. With your help, we can ensure that it survives and flourishes.
